What kinds of face and neck eczema do you treat?

On the face and neck we commonly treat: Eyelid and periocular eczema; seborrheic dermatitis (flaking around the nose, brows, and hairline); atopic dermatitis of the head and neck; irritant and allergic contact dermatitis from skincare, fragrance, hair products, or nickel; nummular eczema; and eczema on and behind the ears. Why does my face need a different cream than the rest of my body?

Eyelid skin is the thinnest on your body, and facial skin generally absorbs far more of whatever you put on it than your arms or legs do. That means a cream strong enough for your elbows can be too much for your face, where prolonged use of potent steroids is more likely to cause thinning, visible vessels, and rebound redness. Is it safe to use near my eyes?

The eye area is treated as its own case. If your eyelids are affected, your clinician will select an option appropriate for skin that thin, typically a non-steroidal, and will tell you exactly how close to the eye it can be applied and how much to use. Never extend a cream prescribed for another part of your body onto your eyelids on your own. If anything stings, blurs your vision, or worsens around your eyes, stop and message your specialist, and seek in-person care for any sudden eye pain or vision change.

How does the treatment process work?

The exact prescription depends on your age, the specific spots affected, severity, and medical history.

Do you use topical steroids, and how do you avoid overuse?

This matters more on the face than anywhere else. Long-term steroid use is associated with thinning skin, visible vessels, and rebound redness, and facial skin shows it soonest. For that reason our clinicians often lead with non-steroidal options here, and when a steroid is appropriate it is usually a low-potency one such as Desonide, used for a defined window rather than indefinitely. The goal is to get you onto a non-steroidal maintenance plan as quickly as possible.

How soon will I see results?

Redness and flaking usually settle before any lingering discoloration fades, which can take longer. Can I still wear makeup and keep my skincare routine?
