Outdoor primroses (P. vulgaris, P. × polyantha) and many garden Primula species contain significantly lower primin concentrations than P. obconica, which has unusually dense secretory trichomes. In practice, many patients sensitized to P. obconica tolerate brief, casual contact with outdoor Primula species, particularly when wearing gloves. However, sensitization threshold varies by individual, and some highly sensitized patients do react to other Primula species. If you wish to grow outdoor primroses after a P. obconica sensitization, discuss with your dermatologist and start with brief gloved contact while monitoring for any skin reaction. Primin-free P. obconica cultivars and many commercial P. vulgaris varieties are specifically bred to minimize sensitization potential and are generally better tolerated.
