Most cases of sponge-related hand dermatitis can be managed at home by switching to non-abrasive cleaning tools and applying emollients consistently. You should see a dermatologist if: the rash does not improve after 2 weeks of avoiding abrasive sponges; the rash spreads beyond your hands; you develop blisters, oozing, or crusting; you have signs of infection (spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever); or you have pre-existing atopic dermatitis that is flaring. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis, rule out allergic contact dermatitis with patch testing if indicated, and prescribe prescription-strength topical corticosteroids or antibiotics if needed.
Children can develop mechanical irritant dermatitis from Scotch-Brite sponges if they use them for cleaning or crafts, but the condition is less common in children because they typically have less cumulative exposure than adults. Children with atopic dermatitis are at higher risk because their skin barrier is already compromised.
