They thrive along roadsides, railroad embankments, highway medians, pasture edges, and any disturbed soil with adequate sunlight. Sweetclover is especially abundant in the Great Plains, Midwest, and agricultural regions where it was historically planted as a nitrogen-fixing cover crop and bee pasture plant. If you live in a rural or suburban area with roadsides, vacant lots, or agricultural land, sweetclover almost certainly grows nearby. Urban residents may encounter it in vacant lots and transportation corridors.
Sweetclover disease is a hemorrhagic condition in cattle (and occasionally sheep, horses, and other livestock) caused by consuming moldy sweetclover hay. When sweetclover hay molds during storage, fungi metabolize the coumarin in the plant into dicoumarol, a potent anticoagulant that inhibits vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Affected cattle develop uncontrollable bleeding from minor wounds, internal hemorrhaging, and often fatal blood loss. The condition was first documented in the 1920s in the American Midwest and Great Plains. Its investigation led directly to the discovery of dicoumarol and the subsequent development of warfarin. Modern agriculture manages this risk through proper hay curing and storage, though sporadic cases still occur.
