Does SelectHealth Cover Wegovy?

The verdict

Conditional on most plans

SelectHealth (Intermountain Health) covers Wegovy for weight management with prior authorization on commercial plans that include the anti-obesity benefit, with published criteria: BMI 30 or higher, or BMI 27 or higher with a weight-related comorbidity, plus documented prior weight-loss attempts. Not every SelectHealth plan includes the benefit — confirm plan inclusion before submitting PA. Medicare covers only the cardiovascular risk reduction indication.

Informational only — not insurance advice
  • SelectHealth publishes PA criteria for Wegovy weight-loss coverage: BMI 30 or higher (or 27 or higher with a comorbidity) plus documented prior weight-loss attempts — a more concrete framework than many regional plans that do not publish drug-level detail.

SelectHealth, prior authorization criteria for anti-obesity agents

  • SelectHealth and Regence overlap in Utah and Idaho — but Regence does not publish Wegovy drug-level detail, while SelectHealth has published its BMI and prior-attempt PA criteria, differentiating the two plans' transparency for patients.

    SelectHealth and Regence member formularies

  • Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management (BMI 30+, or 27+ with a weight-related comorbidity) and for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established CVD — it is a weight-loss and CV drug, not a diabetes drug.

Medicare vs. commercial coverage

Whether SelectHealth covers Wegovy depends heavily on which kind of plan you hold. They follow completely different rules — here's each one, side by side.

Medicare

Part D & Advantage plans

Conditional

Medicare Part D cannot cover Wegovy for weight loss by federal statute. For SelectHealth Medicare members with established cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese, the cardiovascular risk reduction indication is coverable under Part D with prior authorization. The $2,100 beneficiary OOP cap applies in 2026. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (launching July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027) provides weight-loss access to Wegovy at a fixed $50 per month copay outside Part D — this does not count toward the deductible, TrOOP, or the $2,100 cap. Bridge eligibility requires provider attestation: BMI 35 or higher; or BMI 30 or higher with heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, or CKD; or BMI 27 or higher with prediabetes, prior MI, prior stroke, or symptomatic PAD. Members already receiving a Part D-covered GLP-1 are ineligible. Medicare beneficiaries cannot use the NovoCare savings card.

Commercial / Employer

Group & marketplace plans

Conditional

SelectHealth is Intermountain Health's plan, serving Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Colorado. It provides slightly more published PA structure for Wegovy than many not-publicly-published regional plans: commercial plans that include the weight-loss benefit cover Wegovy with prior authorization requiring BMI 30 or higher (or 27 or higher with a comorbidity) and documented prior weight-loss attempts. Not every SelectHealth plan includes the anti-obesity drug benefit — the plan must specifically include it. ACA/individual plans generally exclude Wegovy for weight loss. Medicaid coverage is state-dependent across UT/ID/NV; non-weight-loss FDA indications are covered under applicable Medicaid programs. Per-plan tier is not publicly published; verify specific cost-share with SelectHealth. If the benefit is absent from the plan, this is a benefit exclusion — prior-authorization paperwork will not override it.

The 5 boxes you must tick to get approved

Commercial plans that will consider Wegovy require prior authorization. Check off what applies to you to see how close you are — this is a guide, not a guarantee of approval.

Your cost, three ways

What Wegovy actually costs you swings enormously depending on how it's covered. Here's the realistic range.

No coverage

Paying cash

$1,349 per month (Novo Nordisk published list price for a 28-day supply)

List price with no coverage — before any manufacturer savings card.

PA approved

With coverage

Commercial cost-share where the plan includes the benefit: not publicly published per-plan; varies by tier. NovoCare Wegovy Savings Offer: commercially insured SelectHealth members whose plan covers Wegovy may pay as little as $25 per month (max savings $100 per 28-day supply). ACA/individual members generally excluded from weight-loss coverage. Medicare CV indication: Part D cost-share depends on tier and benefit phase; $2,100 OOP cap 2026. Medicare Bridge (weight loss, from 7/1/2026): fixed $50 per month outside Part D.

Typical monthly copay once prior authorization is approved.

Lowest cost

Bridge program

NovoCare self-pay program: approximately $199 per month for starting doses (0.25/0.5 mg, first two fills through December 31, 2026), then approximately $349 per month for standard doses. Not available to Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries. From January 1, 2027, Novo Nordisk has announced a list-price reduction to approximately $675 per month; the IRA-negotiated Maximum Fair Price of $274 per 30-day supply also takes effect January 1, 2027.

Reduced copay through the assistance program, where eligible.

Check YOUR exact coverage in 3 steps

General answers only get you so far. Here's how to confirm your own plan's decision in a few minutes.

  1. 1

Confirm whether your SelectHealth plan includes the anti-obesity benefit

Not every SelectHealth plan includes anti-obesity drug coverage. Before any PA paperwork, confirm with SelectHealth member services or your HR department that the weight-loss drug benefit is included in your specific plan. This one step prevents wasted effort on a PA for an excluded benefit.

  2. 2

Prepare your BMI and prior weight-loss attempt documentation

SelectHealth requires BMI documentation (30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a comorbidity) and documented prior weight-loss attempts. Gather records of previous weight-loss efforts — dietary programs, medical interventions, or behavioral programs — before your prescriber submits the PA.

  3. 3

Ask your prescriber about the CV indication or Bridge eligibility if applicable

If you have established cardiovascular disease and are overweight or obese, ask your provider whether the cardiovascular risk reduction indication provides a separate coverage path. Medicare SelectHealth members should ask about GLP-1 Bridge eligibility (launching July 1, 2026, $50/month outside Part D).

Options if SelectHealth won't cover Wegovy

A denial isn't the end of the road. These are the paths people commonly explore next — discuss any of them with your prescriber.

SelectHealth anti-obesity benefit (where plan includes it)

For SelectHealth commercial members whose plan includes the weight-loss benefit, the PA process uses published criteria: BMI 30 or higher (or 27 or higher with comorbidity) and documented prior weight-loss attempts. The approval path is predictable when the benefit is in the plan.

Cardiovascular indication (Medicare Part D or commercial)

Wegovy is FDA-approved for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established CVD who are overweight or obese. This indication may be coverable under Medicare Part D or certain SelectHealth commercial plans with prior authorization, independent of the weight-loss benefit.

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge

Launching July 1, 2026, the Bridge provides eligible Medicare beneficiaries weight-loss access to Wegovy at $50 per month through December 31, 2027, outside Part D. Eligibility criteria apply; members already on a Part D-covered GLP-1 are ineligible.

Compounded semaglutide

Compounded semaglutide, available through licensed telehealth platforms, does not require insurance prior authorization. Starting from $49 per month. Compounded semaglutide is not the same medication as Wegovy and has not been approved by the FDA.
