The growing popularity of native plant gardening and dried wildflower arrangements is expected to increase exposure to Asteraceae SQLs including those in blazing star.
Asteraceae contact allergy can occur in children, with SL mix positivity rates of 0.5-1.8% and Compositae mix positivity of 2.6-4.2% in pediatric patch test populations. Children who participate in nature-based education programs, prairie restoration activities, or help in family wildflower gardens may develop SQL sensitization through repeated unprotected contact with blazing star and other Asteraceae. The clinical presentation is similar to adults β hand and forearm dermatitis β though children may present with more facial involvement from touching their face with contaminated hands. The same protective measures apply: nitrile gloves and hand washing after plant contact. Parents should be aware that the popular children's activity of making daisy chains involves extensive Asteraceae contact.
