Yes — this is one of the most clinically important and frequently surprising aspects of contact sensitization. A patient may tolerate lavender products for 10 or 20 years before developing sensitization, then suddenly react to products they have used without issue for years. Sensitization is dose-cumulative: the immune system's sensitization threshold varies by individual, but repeated exposure gradually increases the likelihood of crossing it. Once sensitization occurs, even tiny subsequent exposures can trigger reactions. Factors that lower the threshold include concurrent skin barrier disruption (eczema, sunburn, minor abrasions) and increasing product concentration. The 'I've used lavender forever without problems' history is specifically not protective — it describes the sensitization phase before the threshold was crossed.
