  • If your child or patient is experiencing difficulty breathing, severe swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, or rapid onset of symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or speaking, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. This is a life-threatening situation and requires prompt medical intervention.

  • If your child or patient is experiencing difficulty breathing, severe swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, or rapid onset of symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or speaking, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. This is a life-threatening situation and requires prompt medical intervention.

 

Administer Immediate Treatment if Available

 

  • If the person has a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen), use it immediately according to the instructions. This is critical for reducing the severity of the reaction while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
  • Have the patient lie down, elevate the legs if possible, and keep them calm and as still as possible to prevent circulation from worsening the reaction.

 

Monitor and Support

 

  • Keep a close watch on the patient’s breathing, skin color, and responsiveness. Be prepared to administer CPR if the patient becomes unresponsive and stops breathing.
  • If the symptoms improve after the auto-injector, still head to an emergency department, as further medical observation is necessary. Severe allergic reactions can have a biphasic pattern with a second wave of symptoms.

 

Communicate Clearly

 

  • When emergency responders arrive, clearly explain that the reaction was triggered by an allergen in Uncrustables and detail the progression of symptoms and any actions taken, including the administration of epinephrine.

 

Follow Up Care

 

  • After stabilization, always follow up with an allergist or infectious disease specialist for further evaluation, management strategies, and to potentially update the emergency action plan.
