Is the German Shorthaired Pointer better for allergies than a Labrador?
Marginally, but both are poor choices for allergy sufferers. If you are choosing between them purely on allergies, neither will spare you symptoms, and a confirmed diagnosis plus a management or treatment plan matters far more than the gap between these two breeds.
Can immunotherapy let me keep my dog if I'm allergic?
For many people, yes, though it is not guaranteed. Allergen immunotherapy gradually exposes you to controlled doses of dog allergen through shots or sublingual drops, retraining your immune system toward tolerance. It is the only treatment considered disease-modifying, and a typical course runs three to five years with gradual improvement over months. Evidence is strongest for cat allergy, with dog-allergy research improving as standardized extracts develop. Outcomes vary by individual, and it is not a cure, but it can reduce sensitivity enough that living with a dog becomes comfortable. It is best suited to people whose allergy is confirmed by testing and not controlled by avoidance and medication alone, under an allergist's supervision.
