Not uniquely so compared with other dog breeds — all dogs produce Can f 1, which is a recognized asthma trigger in sensitized individuals. What the Lhasa's coat does do is concentrate allergen on the dog's body and release it during handling and grooming, which can cause higher peak-exposure moments compared with a short-coated moderate shedder whose allergen is more continuously and evenly dispersed. For asthmatic owners, peak exposures during grooming are particularly risky. The ACAAI advises that people with allergic asthma avoid pets when possible, or at minimum ensure the pet is kept out of the bedroom and that robust environmental controls are in place before relying on a breed's low-shed reputation alone.
