Are Chinese Shar-Peis good for allergy sufferers?

Even people with mild dog allergy typically find the fold-contact route difficult to manage without consistent, disciplined hygiene.
Why does the skin fold matter for dog allergies?
The skin folds trap saliva and sebaceous secretions in enclosed, moist micro-environments where they concentrate rather than drying and dispersing. Both saliva and sebaceous oils carry Can f 1, the main dog allergen. When a person pets a Shar-Pei, makes face contact, or handles the dog closely, they are in direct contact with this concentrated reservoir. Routine fold cleaning for hygiene removes some debris but does not stop the continuous replenishment of saliva and sebum from the glands around the folds. From an allergen perspective, removing accumulated debris and surface secretions in the folds reduces the immediate contact-transfer load during interactions. However, the folds are continuously replenished with saliva and sebum from the surrounding glands, so allergen concentration rebuilds quickly. Fold cleaning is an important hygiene step, not a substitute for confirmed allergen testing and a comprehensive management plan.
Can I reduce Shar-Pei allergens at home?
You can reduce exposure substantially but not eliminate it. The most important steps are keeping the dog out of the bedroom, running HEPA air purifiers in occupied rooms, washing the dog every one to two weeks (airborne Can f 1 drops about 61% by days five to seven post-bath; Hodson et al., JACI 1999), and maintaining strict hand hygiene after fold contact. Can immunotherapy help me keep my Shar-Pei if I am allergic to dogs?
For some people, yes, though dog allergy immunotherapy is less well-evidenced than cat immunotherapy and outcomes are not predictable. A 2016 review (Smith & Coop, Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol) found that 40 years of dog AIT research had not produced reproducible clinical evidence of effectiveness, partly because dog allergen extracts are poorly standardized.
