Can immunotherapy let me keep my Rottweiler if I am allergic?

For some people, yes, though dog allergy immunotherapy is less well-evidenced than cat immunotherapy. A 2016 review (Smith & Coop, Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol) found that 40 years of dog AIT research had not produced reproducible clinical evidence of effectiveness, largely because dog allergen extracts are poorly standardized. That said, dog AIT may benefit individual patients when sensitization is confirmed and treatment is supervised by a board-certified allergist. For a Rottweiler household with high ambient allergen from both dander and drool, environmental control and immunotherapy together — rather than either alone — give the best practical outcome. A typical course runs three to five years. Outcomes vary and it is not a cure.
