Provider Recommended: Hand Soak Protocol

A step-by-step guide to performing therapeutic hand soaks during eczema flares to improve hydration and enhance treatment effectiveness.

Provider Recommendation We recommend adding hand soaks once daily during eczema flares — very dry, cracked, or inflamed skin. Soaking the affected areas can help improve skin hydration, reduce scaling, and enhance the effectiveness of topical treatments.

How to Perform a Hand Soak

Soak the affected areas in lukewarm water (not hot) for 10–15 minutes.

This can be done in a bath, sink, or bowl, depending on the location of the eczema.

After soaking, gently pat the skin dry, leaving it slightly damp. This helps retain moisture.

Within 3 minutes of drying, apply your prescription medication directly to the affected areas.

Applying topical medication after soaking can improve absorption and effectiveness.

After bathing, apply a non-medicated moisturizer to the rest of the body.

Important On areas where medicated creams were applied, wait about 1 hour before applying moisturizer — unless your provider instructs otherwise.
