Intense Itching
Intense itching, or pruritus, is a common symptom of Notoedres cati. The mites burrow into the skin, causing irritation and leading to frequent scratching.
Miliary Dermatitis
This is a skin condition characterized by small, crusty bumps on the skin. With Notoedres cati infestation, these may appear mainly around the ears, head, and neck of the affected animal.
Scaling and Crusting of the Skin
The skin may become scaly and crusty in areas infested by Notoedres cati mites. This is typically due to the cat's scratching and licking, which causes damage to the skin surface.
Loss of Fur
As a result of the intense scratching and licking, cats may experience loss of fur in certain areas. They could also pull out fur due to discomfort.
Thickening of the Skin
Over time, the cat's skin may start to thicken in response to the continuous irritation and scratching. This is known as lichenification. It's often seen around the neck, ears, and face of the cat.
Symmetrical Hair Loss
Another key symptom is symmetrical hair loss. This typically occurs on both sides of the cat's body and is usually most apparent on the ears, face, and forelegs.
