Skin Rash or Hives
Exposure to sulfur dyes can cause a skin rash or hives, which appear as red, itchy bumps or welts on the skin. These can occur anywhere on the body and can vary in size and severity.
Itching
Itching is a common symptom of a sulfur dye allergy, often intense and persistent. The itch can range from mild irritation to severe discomfort, often worsening if the affected area is scratched.
Swelling
Swelling can occur on the skin or beneath it, commonly in the lips, face, tongue, or throat. This may cause discomfort and can be particularly troublesome if it affects the throat, potentially leading to breathing difficulties.
Redness and Warmth
The areas affected by a sulfur dye allergy may become red and feel warm to the touch. This is due to inflammation and increased blood flow to the area caused by the body's immune response.
Respiratory Symptoms
Some people may experience respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing, as the body reacts to the perceived threat of the sulfur dyes. In severe cases, this can progress to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.
Eczema
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, can occur as a result of an allergy to sulfur dyes. This condition is characterized by dry, itchy skin and may also involve scaly patches, blisters, and skin ooze.
