Skin Rashes
A common symptom of Xanthan gum allergy is appearance of skin rashes or hives witnessed as red, swollen, itchy, blotches on the skin. They can appear anywhere on the body and are an immediate reaction to the allergen.
Respiratory Issues
People with Xanthan gum allergy can also suffer from respiratory problems like wheezing, shortness of breath, suffocation, asthma or chest tightness. These problems can develop if the individual inhales xanthan gum powder.
Digestive Problem
Consumption of Xanthan gum can lead to digestion related problems. These can include abdominal pain, excessive bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea.
Swelling
The allergy can cause swelling of different body parts including lips, tongue, mouth, throat or face. This is a form of allergic reaction known as angioedema and requires immediate medical attention.
Nasal Symptoms
Common nasal symptoms associated with Xanthan gum allergy include runny or stuffy nose, sneezing and possibly post-nasal drip. These symptoms usually are similar to a common cold but are actually an allergic reaction.
Anaphylaxis
In severe cases, Xanthan gum allergy can lead to anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening reaction that can cause difficulty in breathing, dizziness, drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and can be fatal if not treated immediately.
