Crested wheatgrass is a perennial grass species that is commonly found in areas with cool and temperate climates. Primarily, it thrives in the western regions of the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe, which have the ideal soil and weather conditions for crested wheatgrass growth. It is interesting to note that exposure to this grass species might trigger allergic responses in some individuals.
Just like other grass allergies, exposure to crested wheatgrass can cause symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, and in severe cases, an asthma attack. As its prevalence is greater in certain regions, individuals living in or visiting these areas may experience a hike in such allergic manifestations during the grass's pollination season, typically in late spring and early summer.
To manage these allergy symptoms, over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, leukotriene inhibitors, and corticosteroids may be beneficial. Nasal sprays and eye drops can also provide relief from specific symptoms. It's also recommended to minimize exposure to the allergen by staying indoors on high pollen count days or wearing sunglasses and long sleeves when necessary. Further, immunotherapy, or allergy shots, may be considered for long-term relief.
