Needle Grass pollen allergies, like other pollen allergies, can significantly affect sleep patterns. Typical symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, and coughing, can make it hard for the affected person to fall asleep or stay asleep, leading to disturbances in their sleep cycle, resulting in fatigue, reduced alertness and productivity during the day.
Moreover, allergens can also cause a condition known as allergic rhinitis which inflames the mucus membrane of the nose, leading to snoring and difficulties in breathing during sleep. In severe cases, this can lead to sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
To improve sleep, it is necessary to minimize exposure to pollen. This can be done by closing windows during high pollen periods, using air purifiers, and washing bed linens often. Showering before bed helps to remove pollen from skin and hair. It might also help to use hypoallergenic pillows and pillow covers to reduce allergen exposure during sleep.
Over-the-counter medicines like antihistamines can be used at night to control symptoms. Newer antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are less likely to cause drowsiness. Do note, it is important to discuss with a doctor before starting any medication.
In severe cases, allergen immunotherapy (desensitization) may be recommended. This treatment involves slowly increasing exposure to the allergen over time to build resistance. Immunotherapy may be given as allergy shots (subcutaneous immunotherapy) or under-the-tongue tablets (sublingual immunotherapy).
Remember that each individual may react differently to these treatments, and it can take a bit of trial and error to find the solution that works best for your specific needs. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, practicing good sleep hygiene, and ensuring a calm, comfortable sleep environment can also support better sleep.
