Immediate Actions
If you have unknowingly consumed a Beefy Nacho Griller from Taco Bell and have an allergy to one of its ingredients, you need to respond immediately.
Check For Symptoms
Allergic reactions can occur within minutes to hours after eating food with allergens. You may experience:
- Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath
- Paleness or bluish color skin
- Tight chest or chest pain
- Lightheadness, confusion or unconsciousness
- Rapid pulse
- Swelling of lips or throat
- Hives or rash
- Diarrhea, stomach cramps or vomiting
- Sneezing, runny nose or a decrease in blood pressure
Get Medical Attention
Call your local emergency number immediately if severe symptoms occur. Epinephrine may need to be administered. If you have an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen), use it right away and then call for an ambulance.
For mild symptoms, take your antihistamine medications and inform your doctor about the incident. S/he will tell you if you should go to the hospital or not.
Monitor Your Recovery
After the immediate reaction is taken care of, continue to monitor your recovery. Be aware that symptoms of a second wave of severe symptoms can occur. This is called biphasic anaphylaxis. Stay in the hospital for 4-6 hours to monitor for this and get appropriate treatment as soon as possible.
Prevention for the Future
Avoid Unknown Ingredients
It's always best to stay safe and avoid eating at places or consuming food wherein you don't fully know what the ingredients are. If you do eat out, clearly communicate your allergies to the establishment.
Food Allergy Immunotherapy
They specialize in desensitizing the immune system to specific allergens by gradually exposing it to the allergen, hence reducing or eliminating the symptoms.
Inquire about their food desensitization process. A series of allergy shots administered over a period of time may drastically improve your allergic reactions to certain foods. However, the treatment process is different for each individual and should be discussed with your doctor.
Carry an Epinephrine Autoinjector
Always carry an epinephrine autoinjector if you're prone to severe allergic reactions. Share this information with your work, school, family and friends. They should know where you keep your epinephrine autoinjector and how to use it so they can assist you in case of an emergency.
Remember, while it is important to eat safely, it is equally important to know what to do in case of an allergic reaction. Your health should always be your top priority.
