What's causing it
The same symptom can come from very different places. Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD)
The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and helps equalize pressure. When it becomes swollen or blocked โ from a cold, sinus infection, allergies, or altitude changes (flying, driving in mountains) โ fluid builds up in the middle ear, causing a feeling of fullness, pressure, and muffled hearing. This is the most common cause of ear congestion and usually resolves on its own.
Earwax buildup (cerumen impaction)
Earwax is normal and protective, but sometimes it accumulates and hardens, blocking the ear canal. This causes a sensation of fullness, decreased hearing, and sometimes itching or tinnitus (ringing). Ear congestion is usually not a direct allergy. Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) can cause nasal congestion and inflammation that blocks the eustachian tube, leading to a sensation of ear fullness and pressure โ but this is a mechanical consequence, not an allergic reaction in the ear itself. True allergic reactions in the ear are rare and typically involve itching, redness, and swelling of the outer ear (contact allergy to earrings, headphones, or ear drops). Gently pinch your nostrils closed, take a deep breath, and blow gently through your nose as if trying to pop your ears. This can help open the eustachian tube and equalize pressure. Stop if it causes pain โ never blow too hard.

Swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum activates the muscles that open the eustachian tube. This is especially helpful during airplane takeoff and landing or when driving through elevation changes.

A warm, damp cloth placed over the affected ear for 10-15 minutes can soothe discomfort and help drain fluid. This is most helpful for congestion from a cold or sinus infection.

Use a saline nasal spray or decongestant
If nasal congestion is contributing to ear fullness, a saline spray or an over-the-counter decongestant spray (used for no more than 3 days) can help open the eustachian tube. Oral decongestants may also help but can have side effects โ ask a pharmacist or clinician.

Avoid inserting anything into the ear
Do not use cotton swabs, fingers, or any objects to try to remove wax or 'unclog' the ear. This can push wax deeper, injure the ear canal, or perforate the eardrum. If earwax is the cause, a clinician can safely remove it.
