Assess for Emergency

 

  • If you or someone else is experiencing difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, rapid heartbeat, or a feeling of impending doom, call an ambulance immediately.
  • If there are signs of severe anaphylaxis such as confusion, bluish skin, or inability to speak clearly, do not delay—seek emergency help right away.

 

Immediate Steps to Take

 

  • If the individual has a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen), use it at once as directed.
  • Have someone stay with the patient to monitor their condition closely while waiting for emergency services.
  • Keep the environment calm and the person in a comfortable position, preferably lying down with legs elevated if there is no breathing difficulty.
  • Loosen tight clothing and ensure that the person remains as calm and relaxed as possible.

 

Aftercare and Further Monitoring

 

  • Even if the symptoms seem to subside after initial treatment, it is vital to get the patient evaluated in a hospital, as symptoms may reoccur.
  • Keep any medication (like an EpiPen) and allergy history available for the medical team to review upon arrival.
  • Document any progression of symptoms to inform the emergency responders, enhancing the quality of subsequent care.
