Initial Action: Assess the Severity

 
  • If the patient experiences difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse, immediately dial your local emergency services (911 or your country’s equivalent) as these are signs of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • If you are alone, seek help immediately and, if available, use an epinephrine auto-injector following its instructions.

 

Immediate Steps Before Ambulance Arrival

 
  • Administer epinephrine: Use an epinephrine auto-injector if prescribed and available, as early treatment reduces the severity of the reaction.
  • If there is no epinephrine or the reaction worsens, remain calm and keep the person lying down with raised legs if possible, unless breathing is compromised.
  • Monitor vital signs: Keep track of breathing, pulse, and responsiveness while waiting for emergency help.
  • Avoid giving anything by mouth, including food or liquids, especially if there is a risk of airway obstruction.

 

Post-Emergency Considerations

 
  • Follow-up Care: Even if symptoms seem to resolve after epinephrine, seek immediate medical attention for further evaluation and monitoring, as biphasic reactions can occur.
  • Allergy Identification: Once stabilized, consider consulting an allergist to identify the specific allergen and obtain guidance for future prevention, including carrying an epinephrine auto-injector.
