Assess the Situation

 
  • If the affected person shows signs of severe allergic reaction—such as difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or tongue, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or loss of consciousness—treat this immediately as a life-threatening emergency.
  • If symptoms are mild (e.g., minor skin irritation without other systemic signs), monitor closely but remain ready to escalate care if symptoms worsen.
 

Call for Emergency Help

 
  • If severe symptoms are present, immediately call 911 (or your local emergency services) without delay.
  • If an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) is available and the individual is prescribed one, administer it immediately according to the instructions.

  • If an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) is available and the individual is prescribed one, administer it immediately according to the instructions.
 

Provide Supportive Care

 
  • After administering epinephrine, place the person in a comfortable position (preferably lying down with legs elevated) and monitor their breathing and responsiveness.
  • If the person becomes unresponsive or stops breathing, begin CPR immediately if you are trained, and continue until emergency services arrive.
  • Avoid giving any food or drink unless advised by a medical professional.
 

Follow-Up Care

 
  • Even if symptoms seem to improve after initial treatment, transport the person to a hospital for further observation. Anaphylaxis can sometimes have a biphasic course, with symptoms returning after an initial improvement.
  • Seek advice from an allergist for further evaluation and to discuss long-term management strategies, including the avoidance of known allergens and carrying emergency medication.
