  • If there are signs of a severe allergic reaction—such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rapid heartbeat, confusion, or loss of consciousness—call an ambulance immediately (dial 911 or your local emergency number).
  • If symptoms are mild (such as slight hives or minor swelling) but worsen quickly, do not delay seeking emergency help.

 

Immediate Actions

 

  • If the patient carries a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen), administer it immediately as directed by their healthcare provider.
  • Have the patient sit or lie down and try to remain calm to help slow the spread of the allergen.
  • Monitor the patient closely, as symptoms can escalate rapidly even if they initially appear mild.

 

Secondary Measures

 

  • Maintain a clear record of the time the reaction started and any medications given, as this information is vital for emergency responders.
  • Once medical help arrives, provide them with all relevant information about the exposure and the patient’s medical history, especially related allergies.
  • After the emergency has been managed, schedule a follow-up with an allergist or your primary care provider to review and adjust future preventive strategies and treatments.
