Immediate Emergency Assessment

 

  • Call for help: If the patient shows any signs of severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe hives, rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness), call an ambulance immediately. Do not delay.
  • Check for anaphylaxis: If symptoms of anaphylaxis are present, such as trouble breathing or a feeling of impending doom, it is critical to get medical assistance as soon as possible.

 

Emergency First Aid Steps

 

  • Use your epinephrine auto-injector if available: If the patient has been prescribed an epinephrine auto-injector and is showing signs of a severe reaction, administer it immediately following the instructions provided.
  • Keep the patient calm and upright: Position the patient in a comfortable and safe way, preferably sitting up if they are having trouble breathing, to help reduce the risk of shock.
  • Monitor vital signs: Keep a close watch on the patient’s breathing, pulse, and level of responsiveness until emergency services arrive. Be prepared to start CPR if the situation deteriorates.

 

Important Considerations

 

  • History of allergies: Confirm if the patient has known allergies or previous severe reactions. This information can be important for the responders.
  • Stay with the patient: Ensure that the patient is not left alone. Reassure them to help reduce their anxiety, as stress can worsen the reaction.
  • Follow up urgently: Even if symptoms improve after initial treatment, the patient should be examined by healthcare professionals, as biphasic reactions can occur.
