Immediate Action

 
  • Call emergency services immediately: If the person exhibits any signs of severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, rapid or weak pulse, confusion, or loss of consciousness, dial your local emergency number (e.g., 911) without delay.
  • Administer epinephrine: If an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) is available and the individual is known to be allergic to peanuts, use it at the first sign of a reaction. Ensure to follow the device instructions closely.
  • Stay calm and monitor: While waiting for emergency services, keep the person calm and seated or lying down. Loosen any tight clothing and monitor their breathing and responsiveness.

  • Do not delay treatment: Even if symptoms appear mild, allergic reactions can escalate rapidly. Early use of epinephrine and medical help are critical.
  • Positioning: If the individual is feeling lightheaded or is in shock, carefully lay them on their back and elevate their legs unless there are breathing difficulties, in which case a comfortable semi-reclined position is better.
  • Inform medical personnel: When help arrives, provide clear information about the allergen exposure, the timing of symptom onset, and any treatments already administered.
  • Monitor after treatment: Even if symptoms improve, it is important that the individual be evaluated in a hospital setting as reactions can recur.
